Reflecting the other. Italy’s view on non-European cultures

Call for Papers: Reflecting the other. Italy’s view on non-European cultures
Forum Kunstgeschichte Italiens
des Verbands Deutscher Kunsthistoriker
München, 2.-4. April 2012
Plenarsektion I
Dr. Katharina Schüppel / Prof. Dr. Frank Zöllner (Leipzig)
In Italian art, the discussion of cultural and geographical alterity has a long standing
tradition. Since concepts of cultural hybridity in the Mediterranean area have been the
subject of art-historical research multiple times, the current section will look upon the
reflection of non-European or rather global themes in Italian art. From the Middle Ages to
the present the examination of Africa, the Arab World, South and Southeast Asia, China,
North and South America (to name only a few) has been expressed in various artistic forms
including illustrated manuscripts as well as works of conceptual art. In doing so the “other” is
not only received and transformed, but it becomes the backdrop against which European
topics of conflict can be negotiated.
Beyond the scope of a single work or a coherent group of works, the discussion will focus on
communicating ideas and narrations, on questions of exhibition and collecting history, on
curating, as well as on possibilities of interdisciplinary cooperation between the history of
Italian art and the field of Area Studies.
Please submit topic proposals for 20 to 30 minute presentations by December 15th, 2011.
The proposal should not exceed 2500 characters and is to be sent to the following e-mail
addresses: schueppel@uni-leipzig.de; zoellner@uni-leipzig.de
The organizers will bear part of the travel and accommodation expenses for presenters.
